A yorker is a delivery aimed at the batsman's feet — right at the base of the stumps. It is one of the hardest balls to play and one of the most difficult to bowl consistently.
The Grip
Hold the ball with a standard fast-bowling grip. Keep the seam upright with your index and middle fingers on top and thumb underneath for better control.
The Release Point
The key to a good yorker is releasing the ball slightly later than a standard delivery. This keeps the ball full and targets the batsman's feet rather than the half-volley zone.
Run-Up and Action
Maintain your normal run-up and bowling action. Any change in action telegraphs the yorker to the batsman. Consistency in action is crucial for deception.
Practice Drills
Place a piece of tape or a marker at the yorker length on the pitch. Bowl 20–30 deliveries targeting that mark every session. Track your accuracy percentage and aim to improve each week.
When to Bowl It
The yorker is most effective in the death overs of limited-overs cricket, against set batters looking to hit big, and when the batsman is advancing down the wicket.
